The opportunity

Every weekend, weddings, quinceañeras, corporate parties, and graduations book photo booths at $400–$1,200 for three to four hours. What clients are paying for is an outcome — branded printed strips, digital copies, a booth that runs itself — not the enclosure it comes in. An iPad running Photo Booth Studio produces that same outcome with gear that costs less than one booking, and the app's terms explicitly permit commercial use.

Startup costs

ItemCostNotes
iPad$0–$350Any model on iOS 15.6+; a used iPad works well as a dedicated booth device
Photo Booth Studio ProSubscriptionWatermark-free output, unlimited events and templates, background replacement
Floor stand with iPad clamp$30–$60Tall and heavy beats light and portable — it will be touched all night
Backdrops (2)$40–$100One sequin curtain, one neutral fabric covers most client requests
Props set$20–$40Foam and plastic survive; paper props don't
Dye-sub photo printer + media$100–$150~$0.30–0.40 per print; see the printing guide
Ring light or LED panel$25–$50The single biggest quality upgrade per dollar
Total~$150–$700Recovered in one to two bookings

Later, a Sony or Canon camera connected over USB upgrades image quality to what premium rentals advertise — worth adding once bookings justify it.

Is this allowed?

Yes. Photo Booth Studio's Terms of Use permit commercial use, including operating booths as a paid service. The business questions that remain — registering your business, local permits, liability insurance for events — depend on where you operate; check your local requirements before your first paid booking.

The per-client workflow

  1. One event per client in the app — each with its own name, colors, background images, and template selection, so nothing from one booking appears at another.
  2. Design the template with the client the week before: their names or logo, their colors, test-printed once.
  3. On site: stand, backdrop, light, Event Mode passcode on, iOS Guided Access on — the setup guide is your checklist, and the booth runs unattended while you host or work the room.
  4. During the event: guests print and share by QR code, iMessage, WhatsApp, email, or AirDrop; every session also produces a live video and boomerang GIF automatically.
  5. Delivery: with Google Drive or Dropbox connected, sessions upload as they happen. After the event, send the client the folder link — the full gallery, videos and GIFs included, with zero post-processing.

Why Pro is the business tier

Scaling up: a second iPad and stand is a second booth — same subscription tier per device, half the setup time because your templates are already designed. Two simultaneous Saturday bookings is where the economics get interesting.

FAQ

How many events before the kit pays for itself?

At an introductory $250–$350 per booking, the full kit — printer included — is typically recovered within two events.

Do I need the venue's Wi-Fi?

No. Capture, templates, and Event Mode run offline; AirPrint works over a phone hotspot; cloud upload syncs whenever you're back online.

What do rental companies have that this doesn't?

An attendant and an enclosed shell. The open-air iPad format is what most modern rentals deliver anyway — see the honest comparison in rental cost vs. app.
